I have tried several monthly subscription boxes. The first I did was Birchbox years ago. I was SO excited and was on a wait list for a couple of months. And I love it for a little while, but then I stopped liking the samples.
The second I did was Julep, which was nail polish. I loved it, until I had so much nail polish I didn’t know what to do with it.
Then I did Fabletics. The clothing is great, but I had a hard time remembering to skip months, so I kept getting charged month after month for something I wasn’t using.
So, I was a little hesitant to try another one. I had seen Book of the Month on Instagram several times, and I finally decided to give it a try. You may have noticed I read a LOT, so it seemed like the perfect fit for me. Plus I had read several of the previous picks like The Woman in the Window (review coming soon), Little Fires Everywhere, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, so I knew they had good books.
Here is the way it works – you pay $14.99 a month and get to pick 1 hardback book. There are 5 book choices from different genres. If you want to add another book (like I did), you can get additional books for $9.99. And you can skip a month if there is nothing that you are interested in that month.
So my first month was April, and I was ridiculously excited. I naturally chose 2 books because I just couldn’t make up my mind. My two books for April were Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell and Our Kind of Cruelty by Araminta Hall. They are both thrillers.
I decided to start with Our Kind of Cruelty. Unfortunately, I didn’t love it. It wasn’t BAD, I just didn’t think it was great. I was a little disappointed, but they can’t all be winners. And I am sure some people will love it – it was a psychological thriller of sorts, but it definitely had a big Fatal Attraction feel to it. It was a little slow, and it really lacked the twists and insanity that I love in thrillers. I am reading Then She Was Gone Now, so hopefully it will be a winner!
I highly recommend Book of the Month club if you are a big reader. I am going to buy the books anyway, so why not? Getting a hardback book for $14.99 is a great price, plus sometimes they have exclusives that won’t come out until later for non-members, which is pretty exciting.
So, if you are interested in Book of the Month club, you can sign up here (*It is a referral link, so I will get a free book if you use my link). And if you use code YESPLZ you get a free book!
Are you a Book of the Month club member? If so, do you love it?
