I’ve checked off another book from my Summer Reading List. This time I read A Simple Favor by Darcey Bell, and man was it CRAZY. I first heard about it when Blake Lively deleted her entire Instagram and only followed women named Emily Nelson earlier this year (remember that?). Well, it was all to promote her movie that comes out later this year based on this book. So I naturally needed to give it a try!
Stephanie is a widow, stay at home mom blogger with one son Miles. Her best friend is Emily Nelson, a beautiful PR executive who works in Manhattan for a fashion company, and her son Nicky is Miles’ best friend. Stephanie frequently picks both boys up from school if Emily is working late or the nanny can’t pick Nicky up. One day, Emily asks Stephanie for a simple favor – to pick her son up from school and keep him until she can get home later than night.
When Emily doesn’t show up that night to get him, Stephanie thinks perhaps she misunderstood and he was supposed to stay the night. Emily doesn’t answer any phone calls or texts from Stephanie. Then when she doesn’t come the next day, she really becomes worried. She calls Emily’s husband, Sean, who is traveling on business, and he says she too is traveling. But Stephanie doesn’t think that is right. When Sean returns home, there is still no sign of Emily, and it appears that she is missing. Stephanie knows Emily would never leave her son, and she uses her blog to try to find her. Then Emily’s body is found. But what really happened to Emily Nelson? And how well do you really know someone?
This was a super psychological thriller. I am not going to lie – it was kind of messed up. The three main characters – Stephanie, Emily and Sean – all have so many issues. I actually hated all of them, but I kind of think that is the point. It would be hard to love any of them. The first half of the book is told from Stephanie’s perspective and through her blog posts. There were lots of twists and turns in this one, and a couple of times I found myself wanting to scream at the book – I won’t tell you what I was screaming, but they weren’t very nice things.
I would call this one pretty good. Was it like the best ever? No. Is it my new favorite? No. But I am definitely not sorry I read it, and I think it is worth reading, especially with the movie coming out. And I can’t wait to see the movie! Blake Lively is obviously playing Emily, and Anna Kendrick is Stephanie. The movie comes out in September, so you might want to start this one sooner rather than later if you want to read it before the movie!
So have you read A Simple Favor? If so, what did you think?
And now I have one quick question for you and I would love to hear your thoughts. As you probably have figured out, I really love books (I was an English major at one point) and I really love to talk about books. Would an online bookclub be something you might be interested in? I’ve been toying with the idea for a while, but I wanted to see if anyone would be interested before I give it a go. After last week’s book review, I’ve had some discussions about the book and it has been so much fun! I really want it to be more conversation than just me giving my thoughts on it. Let me know your thoughts – leave it in the comments, send me an email, let me know on Instagram or Facebook or Twitter. I really want to know if this is something you might be interested in too!
