A few months ago, my book blogger friend Jennie told me I HAD to read She Regrets Nothing by Andrea Dunlap. So I ordered it and quickly added it to my summer reading list, and I finally read it a few weeks ago. Obviously Jennie just gets me because I LOVED this book! It was a crazy, fun and frustrating read all about social climbing in NYC.
When Laila Lawrence’s mother passes away, her three cousins on her dad’s side that she didn’t even know existed show up at the funeral. Laila is a dental hygienist living in Michigan and is newly engages to her dentist boss. Laila’s father had a falling out with his brother and the rest of the family years ago, so she never knew anything about the family.
The cousins come from a very rich family and live in New York. Liberty is the oldest cousin. She is beautiful, smart and reserved. She works as a book agent and loves her job. The twins Nora and Leo are the same age as Laila, and prefer things like patrying and shopping to having actual jobs.
Two years after they first meet, Laila moves to New York after divorcing her husband. Laila begins her new life and her quest to become part of the family she never knew she had as well as living the lifestyle she feels she deserves and was cheated out of, leaving a path of destruction along the way.
This book is all about wealth, loyalty and social climbing. And it is absolutely full of drama, with family issues, betrayal, greed. Laila will stop at nothing to get what she thinks she deserves. It reminded me a little bit of a grown up version of Gossip Girl in a way. Laila would obviously be Little J, you know pre-goth. And I love books that are set in New York.
Is this the deepest novel? Absolutely not. It is a perfect summer read? Most definitely. There is also an incredible (to me) plot twist that I really didn’t see coming.
Have you read She Regrets Nothing? If so, what did you think? If not, you need to add it to your to read list!
