My May Book of the Month pick was The Perfect Mother by Aimee Molloy. I was really excited when I saw it as one of the choices because it was already on my to read list (I keep a note in my phone with a list of all of the books I want to get along with their category and when they come out if they haven’t been released yet).
The May Mothers are a group of mothers who all had babies around the same time who meet up at the park with their babies, talk about the joys and hardships of new motherhood and enjoy a little bit of adult time.
The mothers decide to organize a moms only night out on the 4th of July at a local bar. Winnie, a single mother, is reluctant to leave her baby with a sitter, but decides she could use a night out. Then, Winnie’s baby Midas is taken from his crib while she is out. So the search begins to find the baby.
The story really follows Collette, Nell, and Francie, three of the May Mothers, as they become involved in trying to help return baby Midas to his mother. Secrets about the mothers in the group come out, marriages and friendships are tested, and it leaves you really thinking about the pressures of modern motherhood.
I loved this book. I seriously wanted to call in sick to work so I could finish it. This book was CRAZY. It was super suspenseful and really well written. And there are a couple of really good twists! Beyond the suspense and the baby going missing, I think to book also takes a realistic look at what it is like to be a new mom now and how hard it really is.
This is Aimee Molloy’s first novel, which I hate because I was wanting to read more by her! I hope she writes another one soon.
If you like thrillers, I think you will love this book!
