If you follow me on Instagram (@nikkihodum), then you may know we just got back from our summer beach vacation. It was my Christmas gift from Charlie. It had been seven years since we had been on a vacation (since our destination wedding), so it was time!
I love the beach. I don’t really do much – eat good food, sit on the beach and read, that is about it. To be honest, I am not really much of a traveler. I used to love to travel, but as I have gotten older, I like it less and less. I am not a good car rider (I get car sick and antsy), I don’t sleep well when I am not in my own bed, and of course we have our two crazy dogs who are a handful and we don’t like to ask people to watch them (my parents watched them and they called it “camp”). I only texted my mom about every 2 hours to see how they were.
But it was SO nice to have a few days to not worry about laundry and running errands and cleaning. I was able to spend a couple of days relaxing and doing a whole lot of nothing. It was wonderful.
We stayed at For Morgan, which is a little island on the Alabama side of Gulf Shores (if you are familiar with the area). It is really secluded, and there is VERY little on the island – some houses, a few condos, and a couple of restaurants. There was a tiny market where you could get essentials, but that is about it. It took 30 minutes to get from our condo to the main drag in Gulf Shores to go grocery shopping. Needless to say we didn’t leave many times.
We stayed at The Dunes, which was a 7 story condo all the way at the end of the island. There was one other condo next to us, but most of the island is houses. I think there were only about 56 rooms in the whole condo building. It was really nice because the pool wasn’t super crowded and the beach wasn’t super crowded.
Our condo was located across the street from Tacky Jack’s, a restaurant and bar. We ate there our first night. There are 2 other locations as well – one in Gulf Shores and one in Orange Beach. It was delicious, and so convenient! We could walk there (and did other night for drinks).
We also ventured to Lulu’s, which is located in Gulf Shores. It is owned by Jimmy Buffett’s sister Lucy. I have been there twice before. It is really touristy, but the food is delicious and it is a really fun environment. They usually have live music in the evenings. The wait for a table was 2.5 hours (at 5:30, and no I am not kidding), but since it was just the two of us, we were able to snag two seats at the bar near the water. The fried okra there is amazing, and then I had the red snapper sandwich, which was so delicious.
The other night we ate out, we went to The Beach Club, which is a really nice resort also on Fort Morgan. It was about a 10 minute drive from our condo. They have condos and houses you can rent, plus several restaurants. We ate at The Coast, which is the nicer restaurant located in the club house. Charlie was dying for raw oysters (not my thing), and they had them, so we went. The food was fantastic, and we ate outside overlooking one of the pools and the ocean.
We really had the best vacation. If you are looking for something a little off the beaten path where there aren’t a lot of crowds, I highly recommend looking at Fort Morgan!
So what are your summer travel plans? Are you going on vacation (or have you already been)?
