It is that time of year again – The Lilly Pulitzer After Party Sale! This sale is like Black Friday and Christmas to the Lilly lovers out there, myself included. Why? Lilly Pulitzer only has 2 sales a year – one in August (now September I suppose) and one in January. It only goes on for a couple of days (usually 3), it is a surprise until right before it happens, and it is always madness when it does. They only let so many people shop the site at once, and you have to sometimes wait hours to shop, especially the first morning.
This year’s sale is Monday, September 10 – Wednesday September 12.
So today I am sharing some of my favorite pieces I have gotten over the years from the sale (which you should definitely keep an eye out for) as well as some of my top tips for shopping. The prints will be different, but they will have the same or similar cuts. Please keep in mind that I have been shopping this sale for several years, and I normally get 2 – 3 items during the sale, depending on what is available.
This might be my favorite Lilly item in my favorite print lobstah roll. It is also possibly the hottest Lilly item, in my personal experience. They sell out insanely fast. I was able to get one because I happened to be looking at Instagram when they posted they had added more to sale (see below for more). If you can get one of these, do it. Mine is the captain popover with the buttons, but there is also the skipper popover with a zipper.
I have 2 Essie dress (I wrote about one recently here). They are cute and comfortable and so easy for the summer.
This is another super popular item and usually a few are included in the sale. I have a couple, and I love them. You can dress them up, dress them down they work with jeans or shorts or skirts.
I got this tunic dress during the last sale, and I love it. First of all, the print is so bright and fun. Second of all, it is light and loose and so comfy. Third, it has pockets. This dress is perfect for vacation, the weekend, the office (if you have a more casual office). Highly recommend this one.
This is another really great weekend dress. Cute, casual and oh so comfy. I love all of the Lilly athleisure / activewear. They have super cute leggings too, but I don’t have any of those. The Skipper popover dress is similar to this one.
I don’t have much Lilly that works for the winter, but this is one of them (along with the Lilly puffer vest). I had my eye on this dress when it first came out, and I was so excited to get it in the sale. It is great for really any time of year. I think this is similar to the Bay dress or the Noelle dress.
Another great, easy summer dress. I love the colors in this one. I have had this dress for several years, but I think it is probably similar to the Amina swing dress.
Shopping the Sale
1. Make an account
Go ahead and make an account on Lilly Pulitzer before the sale. Load your payment info, shipping info, etc so that all you have to do is log in and quickly check out. I would also take this time to peruse the items. There is a good chance they have already pulled what will be included in the sale, but take note of the styles and prints that you like.
2. The Virtual Waiting Line
When you go to the website, you will be put in a virtual waiting line. It will tell you how many people are in front of you and approximately how long your wait time will be. It could be 3 hours. DO NOT REFRESH THE PAGE. If you do, you will go back to the end of the line. I open the page as soon as I get to work, and then I just leave it running in the background and check on it every so often. Some people get lucky, but I usually have to wait a good 2 or 3 hours that morning. It won’t be nearly as hectic after lunch, but things sell out really, really fast.
3. Get In, Get Out, Go Back For More
Once you get into the sale, my suggestion is you get what you really really want, check out and then get back in line. Lilly Pulitzer will show some things on sale, especially on Instagram and bloggers will be posting about it too (I’ll do my best to post things on Facebook and Twitter and possibly update this post). Remember – just because it is in your cart, it isn’t yours. And there are super limited quantities. Things sell out insanely fast. Get what you really really want, check out and then get back in line. If you want the popover the most and you get one, check out and then look at the sale again. It might help you to filter by size, that way you can see exactly what is available in your size and not worry about what isn’t.
4. Be Patient
Patience is key. I can’t say this enough. It is super frustrating when the site goes down. And it is super frustrating when you have to wait for 3 hours, and what you want is sold out. But just be patient.
5. Check Back
They add more items through the sale. Typically they add 15 or so more items 2 – 3 times. They generally put it on Instagram, which is how I was able to snag a popover last sale. So make sure you follow Lilly on Instagram. Following them on Twitter is also a good idea because they post updates like if they are having issues with the site.
6. Have Fun!
This sale is super stressful for us Lilly lovers but have fun too! It is super exciting to get Lilly on sale!! And the August / September sale to me is more exciting because you still have time to wear your new purchases.
7. Go For It
My last bit of advice – take it with a grain of salt – is GO FOR IT. Lilly goes on sale 2x a year. If you think you want it, go for it. I tell Charlie in advance about the sale, he knows I am a little bit of a maniac but I don’t typically buy Lilly any other time of year (except if there is a special occasion like Charlie’s law school graduation), so I go for it.
One more quick word of warning – not all the prints are on sale. If you click on a dress and several prints are listed, make sure the one you want is actually on sale. They have regularly priced prints in the mix too. So if there is an Essie dress, only 2 of the 4 prints may be on sale. Play close attention to this. But the good news is if you do buy something full price, you can return it, since it wasn’t on sale. Also remember all after party sales are final.
So will you be shopping the sale? Have you shopped it before?
