Last year, I wrote a post on my top 10 closet staples, and for the last 10 months I have been highlighting one each month – why it is a staple, ways to wear it, etc.
Although picking those 10 items were kind of a no brainer to me, I do have some staples that I consider runners up. They aren’t my top 10, but they aren’t too far behind. So today it is all about the other closet staples that didn’t make the top 10 list.
I love a good striped tee. And while it didn’t make the top 10, it is a super close 11. You can dress it up or down, it looks great with just about anything. My suggestion is to have both a black and white striped tee and a navy and white striped tee. And I would opt for a round neck.
A classic denim jacket is something that really never goes out of style. I did have a chambray shirt on my top 10 list, and honestly the only reason a denim jacket wasn’t on there too is because it is slightly less versatile. If you don’t have one in your closet, you need to add one. You will thank me later.
I love a good pair of sneakers. And when I say sneakers, I don’t mean the shoes you work out in. I’m talking about a pair you would throw on with a dress or shorts that look cute but also are comfortable. I have a pair of monogrammed Converses and a pair of pale pink Nikes (similar to these).
I am a cardigan girl. It comes with the territory when you are extremely cold natured. I have SO many of them. Beyond keeping me warm, I find a cardigan has a way of pulling a look together in a simple, polished way. My favorite cardigans are these lightweight ones from J. Crew. They come in several colors and are perfect for layering.
A nice handbag was on my top 10 list, but you also need something for the weekends. And I think a good tote is perfect. I love this one because you can wear it as a tote or a crossbody and it comes in 4 colors.
Full / A line skirts are my favorite. I think they are really flattering on anyone, and are maybe a little more versatile than a pencil skirt (but of course not as classic). They work for the office, a date, a party, the weekend. Depending on your style, this might be a good place to inject a little color and/or pattern, but of course you can’t go wrong with black or navy.
Is there anything more classic than a trench coat? So Audrey Hepburn. I used to have one, but it went missing several years ago. Go for a super classic cut on this and you won’t be sorry!
A pair of leggings is a weekend warrior in my opinion. Whether they are doing double duty as workout clothes and hanging out clothes, or are strictly for hanging, a nice pair of leggings are a must. Depending on the pair & how you wear them, you might can get away with wearing them well beyond the weekend!
I am a crazy scarf hoarder and I am not ashamed to admit it. But a great scarf can really take even a basic look to new levels. My suggestion is to stock up on several colors and patterns. And don’t forget they aren’t just for winter – there are tons of cute lightweight scarves for summer (I have my eye on this one and this one)!
So those are a few more of what I consider to be closet staples. What are some of yours?
