When I was high school and early college, I loved polo shirts. I had array of colorful Lacoste shirts that I wore frequently (I worked somewhere that sold them, so I got a nice discount). I loved that they looked polished but not too polished. They looked cute with skirts, shorts and jeans, and they had just enough of a preppy feel to make me feel like maybe I should be in the Hamptons with Ralph Lauren. (And I was not a collar popper, in case you were wondering).
I haven’t worn a polo shirt in years, but I was really excited to see that J. Crew was bringing back their rugby shirt from the 1980s. Actually, I am really loving all of the throwback pieces they are bringing back! It is fun to revisit some classics. And then I was really excited when I went to J. Crew Factory a while back that they had a version as well, so I decided to go for it.
The Factory version comes in pink and navy striped, gray and white striped, and mustard and white striped. (Hurry though, they are on clearance so they will be gone soon!)
The J. Crew version comes in several color combos as well (including a pink and navy) and I really love the bright red and white one. It would be so adorable for Memorial Day!
One thing I love about this shirt (besides the stripes) is that it is pretty versatile. I went with a skirt and sneakers for the weekend, but it would work in a more casual office environment (or for casual Fridays) with a skirt or jeans and flats or sandals. It will also be so cute for the summer with some shorts and sandals. Another styling option while it is still on the cooler side would be under a blazer or denim jacket. There really are so many possibilities!
This could be the start of my polo – wearing revival. You have been warned.
So how do you feel about polo shirts? Love them? Hate them?
