Staple: Blazer

In August, I wrote about my top 10 wardrobe staples every woman needs in her closet. And every month I am highlighting one of those staples, and telling you WHY you need it. This month’s staple is a nice blazer.

I love blazers! They are such a versatile piece. They go way beyond pairing with a pencil skirt for the office. A blazer can instantly make an outfit feel more professional, or a little dressier. You know that slip dress you don’t know how to wear after summer? Top it off with a blazer for a more polished look. And blazers even look good when paired with jeans and a t-shirt! And of course they look great paired with a skirt or over a dress.

Sure, there are lots of cute, fun blazers out there. But if you are going to spend a decent amount on a staple piece (which is what we are going for), I suggest picking a classic cut in a neutral color – black, grey, navy or camel. While black would probably be the most versatile, you can do a lot with grey, navy and camel too! J. Crew has really great blazers. I got my navy one from there several years ago. It still looks great, is a classic cut and has really held up well. Banana Republic also has nice ones. I have a grey one from there that I love!

So now that we have down what you are looking for, here are three great ways to style a blazer.

Blazer Styling with a Skirt

Blazer / Skirt / Shirt / Shoes

This look would work for so many situations! Depending on your office, you could wear it to work, for drinks, for brunch, on a date (depending on the date, of course).

Blazer Styled with a Dress

Blazer / Dress / Scarf / Booties

This look is super office appropriate, but you could easily switch out the scarf for a statement necklace for evening events.

Blazer Styled with Jeans

Blazer / Jeans / Shirt / Shoes

Blazer + jeans is always a great combo. This look is great for casual Friday at work, running errands on the weekend, a trip to the movie, lunch with friends, you name it. For something even more casual, do a graphic tee and a pair of sneakers.
