In August, I wrote about my top 10 wardrobe staples every woman needs in her closet. And every month I am highlighting one of those staples, and telling you WHY you need it. This month’s staple is a pair of classic pumps.
Pumps, to me, are a pretty obvious wardrobe staple. There are going to be those times that you need a nice shoe. You want something that would work in just about any situation – the office, an interview, a wedding, a funeral, you name it. For your staple pump, you want it to be really timeless. You need something that is classic in a neutral color (I would go with black, but nude would work as well) that is hopefully not too painful to wear.
I would opt for a closed toe, and either do a round toe, or a not extreme pointed toe. You know those super pointy ones that look like you could probably take someone’s eye out? Not those. Just keep this very simple – no cut outs, no crazy embellishments. You know I love amazing shoes, but this isn’t the time for that. These are not the WOW shoes (don’t worry, those are coming).
The heel height really depends on what you are comfortable with. I wouldn’t go with something super crazy tall (remember we are going towards conservative end), maybe 3″ – 3.5″. If you really hate heels, try a kitten heel. And if heels just aren’t an option, then find a really nice pair of flats that will fit the bill (these would be a great option).
So these are a few suggestions for a classic pump that would be perfect for any occasion:
Just remember that the staple pieces are what you want to spend more money on, so you want to go with something that is going to work for years. Depending on your job and lifestyle, you might not be pulling out a simple black pump as often as some other things, so you want to be able to wear it for years.
